Developing Capable Children

Respectful Discipline for Montessori Schools and Families

"If we center our children's attention on what they do well, express our confidence in their ability, and give them encouragement, their mistakes and faults may die from lack of feeding." ~ Rudolf Dreikurs

Teacher Workshops

Positive Discipline workshops for Montessori teaching staff are designed to create cooperative classroom communities where children learn through building respectful relationships.  Participants will be introduced to Positive Discipline philosophy and tools to learn how do encourage and empower children to learn valuable social and life skills through problem solving, class meetings and respectful discipline methods that are both kind and firm.  Participants will also learn about the roots of misbehavior and how to help children succeed socially and emotionally, and respond to children in a manner that promotes cooperation, respect and independence.

Workshops are developed to help teachers and staff:

  • Create a classroom environment that fosters respect and helpfulness, and reduces misbehavior.
  • Develop clear and consistent practices among the adults in their classrooms to meet behavior challenges respectfully and effectively.
  • Understand the roots of misbehavior.
  • Empower children to be kind, cooperative and responsible members of their classroom community.
  • Help children find a sense of belonging and significance.
  • Effectively train assistants and specialists in classroom management.

Chip holds open PD workshops for Montessori educators in different locations throughout the country (see calendar for upcoming dates and locations).  Throughout the year, Chip also works with individual schools, Montessori training centers, and regional Montessori school associations for staff training.  Schools and organizations should call or email Chip directly for more information on scheduling a workshop or training.

Parenting Workshops

Parenting workshops for Montessori parents are an incredibly effective way to help parents develop an understanding of the power of key Montessori principles: freedom within limits, respect, independence, responsibility, conflict resolution, problem solving, etc.  Parenting workshops are designed individually for schools based upon the goals of the school.  Evening, half-day, full-day and two-day workshops can be structured to meet the needs of a school's parent community.

Consulting and Coaching

Once schools have begun to use PD practices within their classrooms, the next step is to develop a whole school support model to insure uniform practices and administrative support for classroom teachers. Consulting and coaching services are available to help administrators develop policies and procedures to support Positive Discipline implementation, and to develop staff & parent education models for long-term implementation.
